About Faecal Incontinence

Recent research has shown that the average person experiencing Faecal Incontinence is of middle age. If you suffer from faecal incontinence, you will know how embarrassing this condition can be. For this reason, few people consider discussing the condition with their doctor, friends or family. Therefore, most people are unaware of its prevalence.

Symptoms:  Inability to control your bowel movements, causing stool (faeces) to leak unexpectedly from your rectum. Severity can range from an occasional leakage of stool while passing gas to a complete loss of bowel control.  Faecal Incontinence is often accompanied by diarrhea, constipation, gas, bloating, and abdominal cramping.

Causes:  Include constipation, diarrhea, and muscle or nerve damage associated with a weak or disrupted anal sphincter.  Damage to the anal sphincter often occurs as a result of aging or from nerve and muscle injury resulting from childbirth by vaginal delivery.

Treatments:  Depending on the cause of your incontinence, treatment may include:

  • Dietary changes - Certain recommended foods can improve bowel function and control.
  • Medications - Antidiarrheal medicines are used to treat incontinence resulting from loose stools. Other medicines may relax the bowel and treat excessive contractions.
  • Special exercises - To help you better control your bowel.
  • Neuromodulation - Urgent PC provides a non-drug, non-surgical method of treating Faecal Incontinence.
  • Bulking Agent - PTQ Implants provide a minimally-invasive surgical option.
  • Surgery - A solution for certain types of severe incontinence when the anal sphincter muscles are injured or torn.
