Macroplastique®

Bulking Agent for Urinary Incontinence and Vesicoureteral Reflux

What is Macroplastique?
Macroplastique is an injectable soft-tissue bulking agent used to treat female and male urinary incontinence, and Vesicoureteral Reflux.  Macroplastique is made up of two parts – the water-soluble gel (polyvinylpyrrolidone) that is absorbed and removed from the body in urine; and the man-made, rubber-like, silicone elastomer implant material (cross-linked polydimethylsiloxane) that is permanent and not absorbed by the body.  It is this permanent material that causes the bulking effect after implantation.

Macroplastique has been used in over 60,000 patients during the past 15 years. And, numerous scientific publications have reported Macroplastique to be clinically effective with a low rate of side effects (individual results will vary depending on your type of urinary incontinence). So, you can be assured of its safety and effectiveness.

Treatment for Female Stress Urinary Incontinence
The implantation of Macroplastique will support the deficient urethra and help restore normal function. By adding this support, the sphincter remains closed during the process of bladder filling and can be relaxed when you choose.

Your doctor will choose the method of performing the Macroplastique procedure that is best for you. One treatment option is endoscopic, and the other treatment option uses the non-endoscopic Macroplastique Implantation System (MIS). Either treatment is safe and minimally invasive, they are equally successful, and both can be accomplished in less than 30 minutes.

The Macroplastique procedure may be performed using local or general anaesthesia, as an outpatient or daycase procedure. After the procedure most women can go home on the same day, dependent upon the advice of your doctor. In some countries an overnight or short hospital stay is normal. Most women are able to resume normal activities or return to work shortly after their treatment.

Treatment for Male Stress Urinary Incontinence
Macroplastique is a soft-tissue bulking agent that adds volume to the tissue surrounding the urethra. This extra volume around the urethra may increase the urethral sphincter muscle closure pressure so you will no longer leak urine during normal everyday activities.

The Macroplastique treatment is performed under general anaesthesia as a daycase procedure, and is usually accomplished in less than 30 minutes.

This treatment is carried out using a cystoscope to place Macroplastique into the sphincter muscle tissue surrounding the urethra near the bladder. Macroplastique adds bulk to the surrounding tissue resulting in sphincter closure and improved bladder control.

After the procedure, most men can go home on the same day, depending on the advice of their doctor, and are able to resume normal activities or return to work shortly thereafter. In some countries an overnight or short hospital stay is normal.

Treatment for Vesicoureteral Reflux (VUR)
Endoscopic injection with Macroplastique offers a very effective and minimally invasive treatment option for VUR. The procedure’s goal is to elevate the floor of the ureteric orifice and to create a crescent shaped orifice on top of the Macroplastique bolus. This will result in an increase in length of the intramural ureter and abolish VUR. The prescription of antibiotics and follow-up visits will be at the surgeon’s discretion.

This procedure takes about 20 minutes and usually the patient is able to return home on the same day. In children, a light anesthesia is given while adults are given a regional anesthesia. If necessary, further surgery is not precluded after Macroplastique implantation.
